Marshalls Park Academy

Art & Design

 Curriculum Intent:

Why do we teach our pupils Art?

Art is uniquely placed to offer knowledge and skills that can be applied to the wider world, within the creative industries and can be linked to almost all areas of study and personal development. We are proud to offer our pupils the chance to develop and prosper in a way that benefits them for the rest of their lives. Through the study of Art or Marshalls Park Academy pupils will:

  • Use a range of techniques to record their observations in sketchbooks, journals and other media as a basis for exploring their ideas.
  • Be confident using a range of techniques and media including painting.
  • Increase their proficiency in the handling of different materials, including paint, print, clay, photography etc.
  • Have a rich understanding of global cultures and the development of societies through the history of art, craft, and design. By exploring periods, styles, and major movements from ancient times to the present day, students will gain a broader perspective on art history and its connection to culture, identity, and social issues.
  • Be excellent communicators, confidently being able to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others, to strengthen the visual impact or applications of their own work.
  • Be emotionally intelligent, with an understanding of what motivates people and an appreciation of how they think and feel.
  • Become self-motivated, independent learners through art projects and presentations. • Develop the interpersonal skills of self-reflection and organisation, especially when structuring constructive and informed artworks.
